More than 350,000 Americans receive emergency treatment for sports-related head injuries each year. Cycling accounts for most of the injuries, and football is second.
“Injured athletes want to get back to their sport as soon as possible, and their desire is understandable. However, when the head is injured, athletes may risk serious, long-term neurological impairment if they try to return to action before they have time to heal,” according to Dr. Lawrence Maccree, a board-certified neurosurgeon on staff at Methodist Medical Center.

"Many of the campers at M*A*S*H Camp MMC want to be in the medical field now more than ever,” said Cheryl Stallings, R.N., Family Education Program coordinator at Methodist Medical Center. The Medical Academy of Science and Health – known as M*A*S*H Camp MMC – is an annual event that gives high school students interested in healthcare careers hands-on experience in various clinical areas.

But, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, there is a group of teens who are using the summer to give back to their community rather than whiling away the hours in front of the computer or lying around the pool. Life sometimes takes unexpected twists and turns. When Thomas Dahl, Jr., of Oak Ridge joined the Air Force in 2000, he never expected to serve a tour of duty in a war zone. He thought he would work in a non-combat setting, complete his military service, and go into private practice as an eye surgeon, possibly in Oak Ridge. Then, terrorists attacked the twin towers and the Pentagon, and U.S. soldiers were sent to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Quilters' Guild Continues Its Pattern of Giving to Methodist's Hospitality Houses

The Hospitality Houses of Methodist Medical Center are supported through generous donations from the community. For the last nine years, one community organization, the Ritzy Thimble Quilters’ Guild, has offered a unique kind of support to the cancer patients at the Hospitality Houses. The guild has provided lap quilts for each patient staying at the houses. While each quilt is different, they are all made in the same pattern of generosity and compassion.

Jeff Gates doesn’t let being a senior citizen slow him down. In fact, he’s trying his best to outrun his peers. In July, fifty-three-year-old Gates will be running in the state finals of the Tennessee Senior Olympics. The Y-12 employee plans to compete in four track races as well as the 5K road race. If he’s among the top four finishers in any of these events, he’ll win a bid to the 2013 National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio.
