The Summer of Giving is Heating Up
Summer is here and these warm July days have most people thinking of cookouts with friends, afternoons in the pool or lake and vacations to escape their everyday routines. But for those who’ve received a diagnosis of cancer, summer doesn’t necessarily bring days filled with fun and a heat-induced leisurely pace.
Cancer knows no season, and it doesn’t take into account where you live or how difficult it may be for you to receive the treatment you need. It doesn’t care that you live nearly an hour from the hospital, that gas prices have gone up– again, that your cancer treatments leave you feeling too exhausted travel back and forth between your home and your doctor, or that staying at a nearby hotel is too much of an expense when you’re already concerned with medical costs. Cancer doesn’t care, but Methodist does.
That’s why Methodist Medical Center established the Hospitality Houses– to provide a place of comfort and rest where patients and their families can focus on physical and emotional healing without financial burden. Methodist offers two houses that provide temporary lodging for patients of Thompson Cancer Survival Center at Methodist, Thompson Oncology Group and their caregivers. The Hospitality Houses are available for guests who live at least 30 miles from Oak Ridge. Services are offered free of charge and guests stay as long as needed.
To support these houses and their mission to provide a place of comfort to those who must travel for medical care, community businesses are hosting “The Summer of Giving,” a month-long fundraiser to encourage the community to give back to these houses that give so much to others.
Throughout the month of July, you can make donations at designated locations including Lincoln’s Sports Grille, all Y-12 Federal Credit Union branches, and TN Bank. You may also click here to make a donation to the Hospitality Houses by credit card.
Anderson County has a unique service to offer through the Hospitality Houses. They are a source of pride for our county and a way to lend a helping had to our neighbors. While the houses have been a home away from home to guests from 39 states and even one foreign country, the majority of guests who find refuge in these houses are truly our neighbors from nearby counties. These houses are making a difference in the lives of those who are close to us, those who frequently utilize our hospital, our stores and restaurants, who attend our festivals and community events. These Hospitality Houses make the difference when they come to Methodist and Oak Ridge for their care.
By choosing to support the Hospitality Houses, you are supporting your community and your neighbors both near and far. You can help continue this tradition of hospitality with a donation of any size. Whether big or small, every donation can make an impact when our community comes together.
Cancer knows no season. But for the rest of us, it’s summer, and it’s a season to give with the same warmth that the July sun shares with us.
