GI Services
Methodist Medical Center treats all types of digestive problems. Our board-certified physicians and nurses provide quality care for patients, using advanced technology to examine and treat your digestive problems. Gastroenterology services are available for people hospitalized at Methodist, as well as outpatients.
Our services include:
- Upper endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- ERCP
- GI motility testing
- Acid (pH) monitoring
Upper endoscopy (EGD) is the examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum with a video endoscope. An EGD can be used to diagnose problems such as acid reflux and to treat conditions such as bleeding from an ulcer.
Colonoscopy is the examination of the colon with a video colonoscope. It is a common test to screen for colon polyps or colon cancer, but also can be used to diagnose or control bleeding.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure performed to evaluate and treat problems of the bile duct or pancreas duct, such as a common bile duct stone. Treatments such as bile duct stone removal also can be perfomed.
GI motility testing is an examination for movement problems in the digestive system. This type of testing is done with a small flexible catheter that measures and records pressure. Physicians at Methodist use GI motility testing to evaluate the esophagus and the rectum.
Acid (pH) testing measures the level of acid in the esophagus with a small acid sensor. This test can detect if acid reflux is occurring and can help determine whether medications are controlling acid reflux.
